U2 sang this song long back but I heard this song only few years back. I fell in love with this song and so did my friends.
I still remember my friend diode and I used to hang around a lot in purple haze, there we used to get really high, during the last half an hour DJ used to play "with or without you" and man we used to get totally emotional about this song.
But month passed by and still this song remains close to my heart. Always thought what a song but never thought what I really think about the meaning of this song and then y’day I played this song over my guitar and suddenly it occurred to me to ponder over the meaning of this song sung by U2.
Can one be so consumed by the love for a person that every moment he is with her is not enough and he just loves her so incredibly much...So u want to spend all the time with her but still it’s not enough and also being away from her is unbearable as well. The message is fairly simple the hopelessness of one’s situation is depicted with the great contradictions. You give it all, but I want more. Nothing to win, nothing left to lose. So problem is that being with her is too hard to bear because he wants her so much, and being away from her is too much for the same reason. On a bed of nails she makes me wait. You give it all but i want more. He is showing his mixed feelings. He is angry that she is letting him stay in this situation, yet he knows that she is doing all she can. Well if agree with me on the above meaning then with or without you is for you.
All this above meaning are my perception and I guess many people also think on the same line but I have read somewhere that Bono said in an interview that the song is about his battle to overcome drug addiction and how he felt he betrayed God in doing so.
